I have a 2002 MR2 Spyder with SMT transmission. I need some advice and/or information to rectify the problems I am having with it. The car itself is beautiful, clean, and in great shape. The car has never been abused, raced, has had regular fluid checks/oil changes/maintenance/etc., no turbo, and vast majority of the mileage on the car is highway use largely in 5th gear. The Hydraulic Pump Assembly and Shift Stick/Assembly have been replaced through local Toyota Dealership. This wiped out 11 codes and it appeared the car was fixed for about 1 1/2 week and shifted fine. (cost at this point is $3,500 parts/labor) One night, car suddenly began lurching and did not want to stay in gear with squeal noises now coming from the back.
Got it back to dealership - affter the next go-round of diagnostics/testing - they are now saying I need more part assemblies replaced with unbelievable costs associated to do it. I am searching for help and advice on where to turn on either selling it outright, help on fixing it with advise/expertise in the Raleigh, NC area, etc. Below are the dealership's diagnostic notes ( they simply always want to replace entire assemblies and not the affected piece-parts - very very expensive way to go) IF ANYONE HAS IDEAS OR HAS HAD SIMILAR ISSUES WITH SMT - Please let me know.
P0715 IN MEMORY. PERFORMED DIAGNOSTIC TESTS AND FOUND INPUT SPEED REVOLUTION SENSOR NOT READING PROPERLY DUE TO EXTENSIVE METAL FRAGMENTS STUCK TO SENSOR(MAGNETIC).TOOK FLUID SAMPLE FROM TRANSMISSION AND FOUND SEVERE AMOUNT OF METAL IN FLUID. CAR NEEDS NEW TRANSMISSION, CLUTCH, INPUT REVOLUTION SPEED SENSOR, ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY, AND ECU. I have a 2002 MR2 Spyder with SMT transmission.

CAR NEEDS NEW TRANSMISSION, CLUTCH, INPUT REVOLUTION SPEED SENSOR, ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY, AND ECU. Dealer failed properly to preform the work you should not be paying for a second time. Was just wondering if you have rectify the problem as mine pretty much did the same thing your car has. Cost of fixing the whole transmition: gear box, clutch, SMT gear changing module was like 3.5k. Now after 2month the car is in the mechanic again and now other problems seem the be the case, code error came up as P1873, P1646 and P1647 and the mechanic blame it on the ECM as the parts i recently got changed is still under warranty for another month.
I am under the impression that he is trying to dodge the warranty. Does anyone who what i can do or if where and how much is an ECM costing? There are no special maintenance for the SMT-system.
It's made for operating just as trouble free as the manual gear box. Trouble free in most cases. Then there are us having small problems like me (I had a major, see below) and there are those with big problems and the $ just fly away. There are a reservoir tank with the SMT-fluid for the hydraulic system under the intake air filter box but as long as the hydraulic system don't leak and no more than about 20-30 sec passes for the pump to stop when opening the drivers door in the morning there's no need to check the level.
Even Toyota don't know the cause of a malfunctioning SMT and therefore they just change things. In my case living in Sweden with only 90 MR2 Spyders in the country and only 4 SMT that all are imported I have to figure out what's wrong by my self to save money. My problems (that I must have had from the start when i bought my 2001 SMT in 2010) is a sporadic one.
A sometimes slipping clutch and I can't start of slowly without the drive wheels jerking. After winter storage outside for 4-5 months the jerking was just horrible. In the summer I have no problems but now in the winter I really have to drive hard to get the clutch work 100% properly. But then suddenly one morning even if it's really cold the problem is gone for 30 min and then comes back again. I can't count a many times I've done the relearn process and it seems to help a little but not all the way. No error code or nothing and besides this sporadic jerking when driving away slowly and some slipping from 4-5 if I don't lift the acc everything is fine. I can read about toyota chancing a lot of expensive stuff and the car still don't work as it should.
My gear box went to pieces for some reason and was replaced with a brand new one on the 10 year warranty a couple of months ago and for the first two days the jerking was gone but then it came back again. I think i have a sensor that don't get the right read for some reason. I read here in the tread: 'P0715 IN MEMORY.
PERFORMED DIAGNOSTIC TESTS AND FOUND INPUT SPEED REVOLUTION SENSOR NOT READING PROPERLY DUE TO EXTENSIVE METAL FRAGMENTS STUCK TO SENSOR(MAGNETIC)' I think I'm gonna investigate the sensors. Thinking back the car always have had smaller jerking after being parked in a warm garage. Maybe some sensor get's better reading when warmed up. And finally I can say that some biping and random strange stuff from the SMT can be kind of normal. Even the owners manual for a 2006 Spyder have a full page saying that in many cases you can get errors. If it's cold for instance and some other scenarios.
But in those cases you just have to wait a few seconds and the electronics tries again or you just put the gear in N and back in S again and of you go. Despite the problems i just love my little Spyder SMT!
